There are 2 words we like to get across, as children and parents head out on Halloween, trick-or-treating -- FUN and SAFETY.
Have fun out there, gather treats and entertain the folks handing out treats, with your great costumes. But at the same time, be sure to follow some common-sense rules during and after your Halloween journey.
The following sections describe the date and times for Halloween in Saugerties, provide homes with some advice for preparing for Halloween night and provide trick-or-treaters with 10 useful tips that will serve you well.
Date and Times
In 2025, Trick-or-Treating in Saugerties is being held on Halloween night - Friday, October 31st.
Trick or treaters begin trickling out as dusk descends ... typically 5:30 p.m. to so. And the official ending time is 8 p.m., although the activity typically begins falling off around 7:30 p.m., as many of the folks dispersing candy have run out of supplies and have begun turning their lights off for the evening.
Safety Tips - Preparing Your Home for Trick-or-Treaters
- Remove tripping hazards to keep your home safe for visiting trick-or-treaters.
- Keep the porch and front yard clear of items such as garden hoses, toys and bikes.
- Check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs.
- Sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and steps to prevent anyone from slipping on them.
- Restrain pets so they do not jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.
Safety Tips - for the Trick-or-Treaters
- Eat only factory-wrapped treats. When in doubt, throw it out.
- Be as visible as possible. Glow sticks are a good idea. (No chewing on them, though.) Flashlights (with juiced batteries!) are always a good idea, especially for accompanying parents.
- Drivers - reduce your speed in the Village and Town on Halloween.
- For young trick-or-treaters - an emergency contact card in your child's pocket (in case you are separated) can be a smart move.
- Safe costumes rule! Make sure vision is not a problem and ensure a good fit and no dragging skirts, etc., to avoid tripping hazards.
- Be careful crossing streets. Make sure the coast is clear, and crossing as a group is best.
- Stay on well-lit streets.
- Use sidewalks where available, and walk on the edges of lawns rather than in the street.
- Visit homes with porch lights on, and never enter a home or a car.
- Bring a cell phone for quick communication. On the other hand, don't walk distractedly, focused on the phone.
